Highway Funding Bill Contains Key Budget Reform

WASHINGTON D.C. – At the request of Senate Budget Committee Chairman Mike Enzi (R-WY), the long-term highway funding legislation approved by the United States Senate contains a key budget reform that, if enacted, would ensure funds are spent only on transportation priorities. The budget reform provision included in the Highway Trust Fund bill is an important first step to help ensure unused funding authority will not be used for non-transportation purposes or become a budget gimmick for more government spending.

“This budget reform provision clarifies the intent of Congress to address the needs of our aging infrastructure in a fiscally responsible manner,” said Chairman Enzi.  “The provision is an important first step in helping protect transportation funding, prevent its diversion, and provide long-term certainty for the Highway Trust Fund.”
