Sessions Comments On Committee’s Analysis Revealing True Impact Of Defense Sequestration

WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, issued the following statement today upon the release of a new Budget Committee analysis about the concrete effects of the sequester on both defense and non-defense spending. In light of the supercommittee’s failure to reach a deficit reduction agreement, the disproportionate nature of defense cuts has received increased attention:

“There’s been much confusion over the actual effects of the sequester. This analysis sets out where the reductions fall. The effect on defense is clearly disproportionate. The defense budget will experience a dramatic decrease—a net inflation-adjusted decrease of around 20 percent—while, cumulatively, the other 5/6 of the budget will see an inflation-adjusted increase of nearly 50 percent. Every part of our budget must be made more lean, but dramatically reducing defense while ignoring the primary drivers of our debt is both unwise and dangerous.”
