Chairman Conrad Statement Responding to Republican Efforts to Take Recent Tax Cut Comments Out of Context
“Republicans are wrongly taking my comments yesterday out of context. I do not support extending all of the Bush tax cuts.
“I have said repeatedly what is needed is a comprehensive and balanced deficit reduction plan that includes fundamental tax reform, entitlement reform, and further discretionary savings. Tax reform is going to have to be phased in, but it is not desirable to simply kick the can down the road by extending tax cuts without reform. Once you start kicking the can down the road, people are very willing to keep doing it.”
